Who doesn’t love an old picture? Is there anyone who doesn’t love a good gif? I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t fancy both things. I know I do! Kevin Weir has taken his apparent love for gifs and antique photos and combined them into a stunning art form!
Using animation, the man brings images to life – literally. Some are science fiction, War of the Worlds, inspired. Others are spooky (a spirit whisking a soldier’s soul away turned out quite haunting). There are images that are just silly – a lady turning into a flock of birds, who would have thought! They are brilliant, quirky, and beautiful.
This artwork seems to follow the mix-media artistic movement that is sweeping through the modern entertainment industry. The old and new juxtapose to create something wickedly quirky. It’s not just gifs getting this treatment, but many other creative outlets.
In literature, for example, Ransom Riggs brings his YA fantasy Miss Peregrine series to life by weaving a story inspired by old and unique photos he’s found at flea markets. Not only that, but eBooks have soundtracks and images you can explore. Videos are becoming interactive – click on a different part and it leads to new content or the creators give assignments (from art to scavenger hunts) to complete.
