Lost “Doctor Who” Episodes May No Longer Be Lost!

Rumours are mounting that there is a cache of those Doctor Who episodes long thought to be consigned to the mists of time.

So far the only real source we have about this is from the blog Bleeding Cool:

“What I’ve been hearing, and some of it is attributed to an eccentric engineer who worked for broadcasters across Africa with a taste for science fiction and a habit of taking things for ‘safe keeping,’ is that the BBC have secured a large number of presumed-wiped episodes of early Doctor Who.

“And there are lots. Lots and lots. Completed serials that we’ve only had incomplete before, full series that nothing existed of. Not everything. But heaps and heaps. Possibly even The Full Hartnell.”

Now this excites me. I’ve been a fan since 1973 – my parents had either the folly or foresight to sit their 4-year-old daughter in front of Who, and I remember very clearly Jon Pertwee’s first story, “Spearhead from Space”. It had a profound effect on me; so much so that I had a recurring nightmare for 30 years about shop mannequins whose hands opened fire on people.

Since that time I’ve worked my way through Who from the first episode, and am proud to say I’ve watched pretty much all the episodes, and my own children have had a similar Whovian upbringing to my own. We’re all looking forward to the 50th anniversary later this year – lost episodes recovered would totally put the icing on the cake!

Bleeding Cool claims their sources are sound, so maybe the rumours have some truth to them…hopefully!  They claim that there’s a complete story of “Evil of the Daleks” (1967). Up until now the BBC had a copy of only the second of seven episodes, which was found in a car boot sale.

This is the stuff which Whovian dreams are made of – much better than nightmares about shop mannequins!
