Matt Smith has been added to the cast of Mary Harron's upcoming film "Charlie Says," as infamous cult leader Charles Manson.

Doctor Who and The Crown’s Matt Smith will play Charles Manson in the upcoming Charlie Says, a new drama from American Psycho director Mary Harron.

Matt Smith Joins The Cast Of Charlie Says

Smith will be joining rising British star Suki Waterhouse (Assassination Nation), along with Hannah Murray (Game Of Thrones), Odessa Young (Assassination Nation), Marianne Rendon (Imposters), Carla Gugino (Sin City, Watchmen), Kaylie Carter (Godless), and Merritt Wever (Godless, Nurse Jackie).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will focus on the three young women (Murray, Young, and Rendon) who were sentenced to death in the wake of the Manson family murders. When the death penalty was lifted, they were instead sentenced to life in prison. A young graduate student, Karlene Faith, (Wever) is sent to reeducate them, and eventually causes them to face the reality of their horrific crimes.

Harron will be reuniting with American Pyscho writer Guinevere Turner, who will be using Ed Sanders’ 1971 best-selling book The Family and Karlene Faith’s The Long Prison Journey of Leslie Van Houten as source material.

Harron told THR, “Guinevere Turner’s script brings a fresh and unique perspective to the infamous story of the Manson murders. We have now found the perfect cast to bring it to life.”

Charlie Says is set to begin shooting in L.A. this spring.
