More well-known for his roles as romantic lead in films like The Wedding Planner, How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days and Failure to Launch, Matthew McConaughey appears to be stretching his acting chops more recently, playing gritty, dramatic roles in Killer Joe and Mud. This move into drama looks set to continue as the Star Tribune is reporting confirmation that he will be the male lead in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

According to the paper, the “deal is done” – he’ll be starring in the sci-fi epic, due for release late next year. During a phone interview with the star, currently filming the upcoming HBO crime series True Detective, McConaughey apparently said “I’m confirming” that he had accepted the role, but no further details were discussed. However, no official announcement has been released.

This is not surprising as Christopher Nolan projects are always surrounded with a cloak of mystery, so what do we know about Interstellar? Not very much at all. The script is written by Christopher’s brother and regular collaborator, Jonathan. The story is believed to involve “time travel and alternate dimensions and sees a group of explorers travel through a wormhole” and so far there has been no other casting news.

Christopher Nolan has been known to pull some amazing performances from his actors, such as Guy Pearce in Memento, Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman in The Prestige, so if the rumours are true we can expect some great things from Matthew who may lose the tag of rom-com lead.
