To be held on January 21 at the Village Studios in West Hollywood, the gala will pay tribute to the life and career contributions of the Harvest Moon singer who Recording Academy president Neil Portnow described as a “musical icon”.
In talking about Young, Portnow said, “The contributions of Neil Young are innumerable, as is his incomparable body of work, and we look forward to an unforgettable evening with this legendary artist.”
Young is probably best known to younger generations for his rock anthem, “Rockin’ in the Free World”, the haunting “Philadelphia” from the film soundtrack of the 1993 Tom Hanks film of the same name and for which he was nominated for an Oscar for (though lost to the other nominee from the same film – Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadephia”) and for writing “Angry World” (winner of the 2011 Grammy for Best Rock Song).

Among his numerous musical honours, he has also received a number of awards for his philanthropic work including the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year and the 2001 Spirit of Liberty Award.
Young’s most recent album, Psychedelic Pill was released in 2012. Check out Young’s live performance of “Rockin’ in the Free World” at the 1990 FarmAid.
