Filming for Season 5 of Downton Abbey started early this year.  There is a long wait before we can see the magnificent Manor House and its colorful inhabitants. Several onset pictures have surfaced that could hold us for the moment.  We will take what we can get, after all a picture does paint a thousand words, and in this case may actually give us a hint of things to come.

In pictures recently released by the Mirror, we see an always immaculate Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) standing next to our favorite Irish firebrand Tom Branson (Allen Leech) holding what appears to be a rolled parchment in his hand. What could that be?  Is it a plan for the farming estate?  Branson after all is the Estate Manager and Lady Mary who owns half of it has chosen to take a more active part in its management.

Well, let us hope it doesn’t involve Lady Mary getting down in the mud with the pigs again.  Then again, the scene was shout outside of a churchyard and there is a picture of Lady Mary standing with her father Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), and Branson.  They really can’t be planning business outside a church, can they?

Several pictures have also been taken in the nearby graveyard: Tom walking out with scheming but endearing Under-Butler Thomas (Rob James-Collier), and in pictures released by the Daily Mail, we see our two favorite Grand Old Dames; Dowager Countess Grantham (Maggie Smith) and Violet Crawley (Penelope Wilton).  Should we be worried that the family has gathered in a graveyard?  Many of us have not yet gone over the deaths of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) and Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay).

Thankfully, none of the characters appear to be wearing anything close to funeral garb.  Perhaps they are just there to pay their respects to Matthew and Sybil.  Still, why is Branson carrying around that scroll?  Is it a spell to bring the beloved characters back to life?  If only it was that kind of show, many of us will forgive that kind of plot point if it means seeing Matthew and Sybil back.

Downtown Abbey Season 5 is expected to premier on ITV in the United Kingdom on September.
