Iconic actor Omar Sharif is the latest veteran performer to fall victim to Alzheimer’s disease.

Sharif’s son, Tareq, divulged the actor’s illness during an interview with the Spanish publication El Mundo on May 23. Omar Sharif’s agent later confirmed the unfortunate news. Neither source revealed any further details regarding the 83-year-old’s current state of health.

After building a career in his native Egypt, the actor broke into the international movie scene with his Oscar-nominated portrayal of Sherif Ali in David Lean’s 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia. He went on to other notable roles in Hollywood, including the leads in Doctor Zhivago and Funny Girl. Sharif also acquired a reputation as a gambler and a ladies’ man. He often had brief affairs with actresses including Catherine Deneuve, Tuesday Weld,  Ingrid Bergman, and his Funny Girl co-star Barbra Streisand.
