News came out yesterday that has shocked fans of the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black. It emerged that star Michelle Hurst was involved in a serious car accident late last year and has only recently woken from a 16-day coma.

Hurst, who plays Miss Claudette in the critically acclaimed prison series, was seriously injured in a car accident days before Christmas. Doctors placed her in a medical induced coma in order to “perform surgeries close to her spine”, reports Variety.

Though she was woken yesterday morning (January 18), doctors are keeping a close eye on her as she remains in ICU at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital in North Carolina.

In order to help cover the actress’ medical bills at this time, a fundraising drive has been started by those connected with the show, with Orange is the New Black author Piper Kerman and co-star Natasha Lyonne (Nicky Nichols) have both tweeted about the drive.

All monies raised from the effort will be handled by Hurst’s sister. Since the news broke in the past few hours, the drive has surged past its $5000 goal, with a total of $11,438 raised at the time of writing.

We at PopWrapped wish Michelle a speedy recovery.
