We are sad to report that New York city rapper, Pumpkinhead, has died. Pumpkinhead, born Robert Diaz, died of unknown causes on Tuesday morning at 39 years old. Graeme “GMS” Sibirsky, co-founder of MCMI Records, which was Diaz’s label, confirmed the news.

Pumpkinhead was known for his large personality and funny punchlines, and he was a constant fixture in underground New York hip-hop circles. He often participated in rap-battles, and stood out as someone who supported other rappers, even though they were competitors.

His breakout song, “Dynamic,” was released in 1997, and he released a number of solo albums between 2001 and 2005. Inspired as a young middle-schooler by Dana Dane, Pumpkinhead worked hard to tell storied through rhyme. He joined up with Block McCourt and Mr. Metaphor to form the rap group, Brooklyn Academy, and released singles such as “Russian Roulette” and “Blind Fury.”

Pumpkinhead was married, had two sons and was expecting a daughter with his wife at his death.
