Rosie O’Donnell has been chosen as the recipient of this year’s Isabelle Stevenson Award.
The award is named after Isabelle Stevenson, a previous president of the American Theater Wing who died in 2003. The honorary award is given to a member of the theater community who has recognizably given to charity, provided social services, or helped with humanitarian efforts.
The Tony Awards committee chose O’Donnell for her dedication in New York’s public schools. She founded Rosie’s Theater Kids in 2003, which is a nonprofit organization that provides NYC public school students with lessons in drama, dance, and music.
Rosie O’Donnell will be welcomed back to the Tony Awards with open arms. She previously won a Tony and she’s also hosted the award show 3 times.
O’Donnell produced the “Boy George – inspired musical Taboo” and she has also starred in several award winning shows, such as: Grease, Seussical, Fiddler on the Roof, Love, Loss and What I Wore, and No, No, Nanette.
The nominations for the Tony awards will be announced on Tuesday, April 29th, and Hugh Jackman will host the show on Sunday, June 8th.
