Scotland Bans Creationism From Public School Curriculum

Science has triumphed over superstition in Scotland. After launching a petition to specifically ban creationism from science classes in the public curriculum, Paul Braterman of the Scottish Secular Society told press, “Now we have, at last, a clear statement from the responsible minister that creationism should not be taught as science.”

Members of the Education and Culture Committee within the Scottish Parliament have said that there is no need to create specific legislation  surrounding the issue, as teachers could be depended upon as professionals to adhere to teaching guidelines which follow established scientific principles. Creationism is not listed as a scientific principle.

For those who think Braterman and the SSS are being paranoid in insisting on a specific ban on creationism, keep in mind that the judgement of teachers can’t always be trusted. Notorious huckster Ken Ham, founder of the Creation Museum, was once a science teacher.

The teaching of creationism in science classes is already banned in England and Wales.
