The wait isn’t over yet but it’s officially getting smaller. The highly anticipated sequel/reboot to the multi-billion dollar Star Wars franchise has begun principal photography. Alan Horn, Disney Studios Chairman, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on April 2nd that the cameras have indeed started rolling and nearly all the roles are filled. When asked what the most difficult part of pre-production was Horn was quick to answer with “Casting.” When asked if he could disclose any names he was even quicker to answer “No.”

Horn went on to say that the second most difficult part was the script. “It’s all about the screenplay. Screenplay, screenplay, screenplay,” Horn said. According to him the screenplay is co-written by Lawrence Kasden and director J.J. Abrams.

J.J. Abrams was offered the role of director by Disney in January of 2013. Having just rebooted a different beloved classic sci-fi film series with “Star” in the title he was a logical choice. Also on the crew are composer of the other six Star Wars films John Williams and Abrams’ favorite director of photography Daniel Mindel who has just finished Sony’s The Amazing Spider Man 2.

Casting news has been buzzing all over Hollywood. Are the three stars of the original trilogy going to make appearances like Leonard Nimoy did in the reboot to his film franchise? So far Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison are all but confirmed to make cameos/pass the torch to the new generation of space heroes. Actors that are rumored to be cast include Adam Driver from HBO’s GIRLS for the film’s villain and recent Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o.

The film is set to release December 18th 2015. While we wait for more news Horn has only one thing to say to fans: “Patience you must have.”
