While everyone seems to be debating the merits of PS4 versus Xbox 720 (just take a look any YouTube comments lately), it seems to be time to take a step back.

Gamers take a step back and let’s delve into the indie/hipster side of the gaming world.

A PC game called Starbound, in particular.

A little backstory for the non-gamers:

Starbound is a 2D side-scrolling, sci-fi sandbox game currently in development by game company Chucklefish. One of Chucklefish’s lead developers, Tiy, worked on a previous game, Terraria. Terraria is another 2D side-scroller that received much praise from critics. Terraria was in turn inspired by Minecraft, one of the most well-known and important indie games of this decade.

Don’t believe me? Its creator, Markus Persson, is listed as

the second most influential person in the world

of 2013, according to Time magazine. That’s just behind Mohamed Morsi, the 5th (ex) president of Egypt.

That is pretty influential.

Back to Starbound. The game has become quite popular, likely from its numerous features. It boasts a randomly generated universe – that’s right, not world, universe. The player may visit an unlimited number of planets, all with varying weather, creatures, vegetation, etc. You can customize your avatar from seven different races and equip them with a plethora of different weapons and clothing. You can terraform any planet you visit and build your own home, decorate it with a ridiculous amount of stuff, and populate it with characters you meet throughout the game. Take a look at this building demonstration:

Want to explore the universe with your friends? Done. Want to build your own base and fight with your friends? Done. The game offers a crazy amount of stuff.

Even when the game is released (it’s still being developed), the developers have added a suggestion section on their site to add extra content that the fans would like. Fans there are, indeed. The game currently has 64,918 people pre-ordering the game, a total of $1,518,910.

The game has attracted quite a bit of attention, being voted as one of the most anticipated indie game of the year, according to Indie Game Magazine.

I’ve only scratched the surface with the amount of content Starbound has to offer. Check the site yourself for more information.
