Stephen Colbert Takes On The Republican National Convention

Late Show host and beloved satirist Stephen Colbert is taking on the Republican National Convention, in a number of wonderful ways. The last time Colbert was involved in a national election, he was still sitting behind the desk at The Colbert Report, and was able to cover the lead up with a great deal of satire through the persona he had created for the show.  This time around, it’s as the host of a popular late night program, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Colbert kicked things off on Sunday night, crashing the Convention and seizing the podium dressed as Caesar Flickerman from the Hunger Games. The appearance was obviously not authorized, as he was escorted from the stage not long after making his debut. Colbert was, however, able to get in a few digs at presumptive nominee Donald Trump, as well as the rest of the party. In a brief video, seen below, he is heard to welcome attendees to “the 2016 Republican National Hungry for Power Games”. As he is being escorted off stage by a security guard, he seems to be trying to talk his way into staying, saying “look, I know I”m not supposed to be up here. But, to be honest, neither is Donald Trump.”

Before sneaking his way onstage, Colbert posted a photo of himself, in full costume.

The remainder of the coverage of both the Republican and Democratic Conventions that will be seen on Colbert’s show looks just as good, with a quick browse of the correspondents and guests he plans to discuss things with reading more like a Daily Show fan’s most amazing dream.

For starters, former host Jon Stewart will guest on Monday’s show, kicking off the official coverage of the RNC, or “The 2016 Trumpublican Donational Coventrump – Staring Donald Trump as the Republican Party* *May Contain Traces of Republican”. While details about the exact nature of Stewart’s appearance aren’t widely known, it will be nice to see the two together again, especially discussing the RNC. Daily Show correspondent Lewis Black will also join Colbert to talk (and possibly rant) about the Convention.

When Colbert turns his focus on the Democratic Convention, or “The 2016 Democratic National Convincing – A Technically Historic Event: Death, Taxes, Hillary”, his show will feature Last Week Tonight host, and former Daily Show correspondent, John Oliver.

While Colbert himself will remain in New York throughout both conventions, his show will also feature a number of other live correspondents.

One last reason to tune in during the Conventions: Colbert has hinted that we may see the return of his The Colbert Report persona!
