Following in the footsteps of Stevie Wonder, celebrities such Jay Z, Madonna, Usher, Kanye West, Rihanna and Rod Stewart are reportedly planning on boycotting Florida in protest of the state’s “Stand Your Ground” laws. It was these laws that were cited as one of the reasons for George Zimmerman’s not-guilty verdict in the recent Trayvon Martin case.
If you recall, Zimmerman shot and killed the unarmed Florida teen back in 2012.
According to the Huffington Post, Wonder announced during his concert in Quebec City his intention to boycott any state with the “Stand Your Ground” laws; aside from Florida, at least 23 other states have similar laws.
“The truth is that — for those of you who’ve lost in the battle for justice, wherever that fits in any part of the world — we can’t bring them back. What we can do is we can let our voices be heard. And we can vote in our various countries throughout the world for change and equality for everybody. That’s what I know we can do,” Wonder is quoted as saying.
The Huffington Post notes that it is still confirming that these stars are cancelling upcoming gigs in the “Sunshine State”. An earlier post of the article stated that Jay Z was on the list of boycotters. However, having spoken to an executive affiliated with his “Legends of Summer” tour they reported that his planned August 16 show with Justin Timberlake at Sun Life Stadium is still a go.
Huffington Post also updated its original article to state that “a source with knowledge of the matter has denied to HuffPost that Rihanna is joining the boycott.”
