When t.A.T.u was announced as the musical performers for the Sochi Winter Olympics, there were a lot of questions. The group, made up of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, are known for their single “All the Things She Said” and for acting gay–kissing and holding hands on stage.
True to form, when the duo got on stage during the Opening Ceremonies, they held hands throughout the whole performance. “TATU” trended worldwide on Twitter earlier today.
t.A.T.u’s small act of defiance is on a growing list of actions that companies and teams are taking to show they disagree with Russia’s anti-gay policies. Yesterday, Google changed their doodle banner, and Budweiser cancelled “Club Bud,” pulling their employees–and their support–out of the games.
For a country that has a “gay propaganda law,” t.A.T.u is a strange choice of performers. But as long as it’s all for show, it’s okay? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
