Last week, the Syfy network announced that they were ordering a pilot that was based on the 1995 science fiction film 12 Monkeys.
12 Monkeys starred Bruce Willis as a convict that was sent back in time to discover the creation of a man made virus that destroyed most of the planet. The film was directed by Terry Gilliam. It was written by David Webb Peoples and Janet Peoples.
Though Gilliam was a director on the film, this appears to be the first time he is hearing of it’s adaptation into a television series.

Gilliam told ScreenDaily: ”I know nothing about that. That’s just ridiculous. It doesn’t have anything to do with me and no one has contacted me.” Gilliam doesn’t seem to hold back any feelings when asked about the spin-off and goes on to say, “It’s a very dumb idea. That’s what I think. If it was going to be any good it would have to be written by David and Janet Peoples.”
As mentioned earlier, David and Janet Peoples were the originally writers for the film version. Like Gilliam, they are not involved in the TV spin off. One person that is involved in the spin-off and was involved in the actual feature film is producer Charles Roven.
Roven and Richard Suckle will executive produce the hour long pilot of the series. It will be written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Matalas and Fickett both worked on the not-so-successful Fox sci-fi series Terra Nova.
Though Terra Nova was cancelled after one season, maybe Matalas and Fickett can redeem themselves with this show!
Production for the 12 Monkeys spin-off is set to begin this November.
