Tessanne Chin was a part of tonight’s stellar lineup for Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House, a concert hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama.
The Jamaican singer was in good company, sharing the spotlight with legendary songstresses Aretha Franklin, Melissa Etheridge, and Patti Labelle. Contemporary musicians Janelle Monae, Jill Scott, and Ariana Grande performed as well.
The songs performed demonstrated the “plights and achievement of women”, and a workshop was held beforehand naimed at educating teenagers and young adults on the women of soul. The performers interacted with and spoke to the students.
Chin made waves when she walked away the champion of The Voice season five in December, and since then has done multiple appearances across the country and in Jamaica.
She also made history tonight, being the first Jamaican musician of note to perform at the White House thus far.
“Listen, people, dreams come true, and it’s all because of you. I thank you and I love you,” she said in a video to her Instagram followers earlier tonight.
