The British Phonographic Industry has changed the procedure by which artists are awarded gold and platinum awards. Now, instead of record companies requesting the honor, the BPI will automatically bestow this honor to the bands that qualify.

This change means that several classic Beatles albums will go gold or platinum.

Gold status is awarded to records that sell or have sold more than 100,000 copies, where as platinum status is achieved after more than 300,000 sales take place.

This new rule change means that thirteen albums by the Fab Four will be awarded gold and platinum albums. Some of these albums include Revolver, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Abbey Road, according to Digital Spy.

Why so few, you may ask? Because the only sales to be counted are those that took place after the Official Charts Company was founded in 1994. Therefore, the accolades are only calculated from that date, rather than the life of the album.

Obviously, were these to be counted over the life of the album, the Beatles would have achieved this status many times over. As an example, Sgt Pepper will be honored with a triple-platinum award, as it has been purchased 900,000 since 1994; but has total sales of 5.1 million since its date of release in 1967.

Other artists to be receiving this prorated award are Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and The Beach Boys, to name a few.
