The Dark Universe has added more characters to its lineup, including 'The Phantom of the Opera' and 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'.

Though early reviews of The Mummy are not being kind to Universal’s Dark Universe franchise, that hasn’t stopped them from adding even more creatures to their supernatural lineup. Recently, we were told that the Bride of Frankenstein would be getting her own film, and now two more characters are gearing up for their change in the limelight.

Earlier this week, Universal announced that both The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame would be joining the Dark Universe as well.

The Phantom Of The Opera Joins The Franchise

“We know we’re going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man,” said Alex Kurtzman, director of The Mummy, in an interview with Fandom, “There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.”

Though it is still too early to name names for the newly announced roles, Kurtzman also went on to suggest some big names that he’d love to join the new Universal Monsters franchise.

“I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…”

All these famous monsters will be connected by Prodigium, a supernatural investigation organization led by Russell Crow’s Doctor Jekyll, another iconic horror character that curiously doesn’t have his own movie in the works. While it looks like Jekyll and Hyde will have to wait, there are still plenty of amazing creatures coming down the pipeline, including The Mummy, which is now in theaters.
