Ivan Reitman has decided to vacate the director’s chair for Sony’s upcoming Ghostbusters reboot. Reitman previously directed the original Ghostbusters in 1984, as well as its sequel in 1989.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news along with Sony’s search for a new director.

The third film was originally intended as a follow up to the sequel, but discrepancies among the writers and actors caused delay on the film’s production. The threequel-now-turned-reboot has been stuck in limbo for some years. Reitman, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnisky made final changes to the script in February following the death of Harold Ramis, co-writer and star of the first two films.

Ramis was set to make a cameo appearance in the film along with fellow Ghostbusters star Dan Aykroyd. Bill Murray is not expected to reprise his original role in the reboot.

Sony hopes to start production on the film as early as 2015.
