True Detective’s first season came to a close this past March, but since the announcement that headliners Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would not be returning for a second round, fans of HBO’s gritty crime drama have been itching for details about what’s to come.

Lucky for viewers, show creator Nic Pizzolatto has finally released a few pertinent — if not entirely juicy– tidbits, including the new location, leads and ‘ambiance’.

Unlike the debut season of the hit HBO show, the series’ second season will remain in California. However though, it won’t be located in Los Angeles. Instead viewers can expect it to be set in some of the city’s “lesser known venues”, Pizzolatto teased in an interview with To The Best Of Our Knowledge.

“We’re going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did with season one.” He continues, “In True Detective, the world itself is the crime. The world itself is poison; there’s something ruinous at work here. The poison at the root of the world is humanity.”

Another difference you’ll see between the first and second seasons lies with the central characters. While Pizzolatto has confirmed that the series is “working with three”, it’s entirely possible our new lead stars will be female.

Back in March the creator told HitFix that season two would focus on “hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system.”

Casting has not officially begun for the series whose finale notably crashed HBO’s online streaming service, HBO Go. However, Pizzolatto shared that he was “deeply in love” with these three new characters and hopes to starting the search for his leading men (or ladies) in the next month.
