In the North Eastern region of Nigeria, there is a group of people called Boko Haram. Boko Haram when literally translated means ‘Western education is a sin.’ The group’s main motive is to enforce the Sharia Law, which is derived from the Koran as the “word of God,” in an unethical and stricter way.

This group has wrecked havoc in the region for several years and has claimed the lives of more than 3000 innocent people, since they rose in prominence in 2009.

You may ask, what really causes this unrest? Well, this wave of violence and unrest is caused by the same factors that cause great wars; taking a group’s own interpretation of what they believe in and then forcing everyone to believe it too. Of course, their methods are extreme, mass destruction and inciting fear on the entire population, which is wrong and completely inhumane.

Their most recent attack occurred on Monday April 14th and involved abducting almost 200 girls from their boarding school, and driving them to God only knows where and doing God only knows what.

While many might ask the question, “So what? There are a thousand cases like these a day,” it doesn’t make the events any less shocking or devastating, especially when so many innocent lives are at stake.  But there is something everyone can do to raise awareness about the events in Nigeria. Social media is a powerful tool; it’s time to have #stopbokoharam trending worldwide. Raise your voice, raise awareness; this is the only way to stop the murder of another 3000 innocent lives.
