Dominic West and Helena Bonham-Carter are to play the title roles in a BBC Four film called Burton and Taylor, set against the backdrop of their 1983 on-stage reunion in Noel Coward’s Private Lives.

The first picture (above) has been released for the biopic. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor first got together on the set of Cleopatra, and married for the first time in 1964.

Their relationship was tempestuous, and the couple divorced in 1974, but remarried a year later in a ceremony in Botswana.  That reunion lasted only five months.

Chris Williams, editor of The Richard Burton Diaries and director of the Research Unit for Arts and Humanities at Swansea University, said the public was still interested in hearing about the couple, and he himself was looking forward to the film.

“Their relationship was one of ups and downs, dissolution, remarriage and dissolution again,” he said.  “It was a very public life.  We are probably used to that now but perhaps we were not then.

“On top of that Liz Taylor was extremely beautiful and glamorous, probably the best film actress in the world and Burton was a huge star as an actor on stage and screen.”

Burton and Taylor is written by William Ivory for BBC Four, and co-produced by BBC America.
