The tech giant revealed a preview of the software update that featured the return of one item that users have been begging to have back: the Start button.

CNNMoney reported that the Start button’s main function in the update would be to “call up the Start screen.”

After users hit the start screen, they will be able to call down the multiple app tiles, which Microsoft affectionately calls “Modern UI.”

CNNMoney also reports that this new feature of Windows 8.1 will allow users to control how they can organize the Start screen. Viewers can make an app conglomerate or spread them out throughout the product.

Besides the return of the Start button, Microsoft has revealed other improvements to their operating system. Windows 8.1’s Search improvements can help users dig into their hard drive and SkyDrive, plus use Google’s number one rival, Bing, to help improve their searches.

“Snap view” also got a minor face-lift, as Windows 8.1 would let users put eight of their favorite apps side-by-side. Meanwhile, Xbox Music has been redesigned to focus on the user’s music including the ability to create playlists based on a user’s favorite songs or artists (which sounds very similar to iTunes’s Genius application).

The Windows Store will also have new features including recommending apps that the users could lose and will feature automatically downloadable updates.

Windows also announced that both Facebook and Flipboard would release official apps soon.
