Over the last few months there has been speculation of a major death for a Marvel Comics character, and theories were confirmed today when they announced to Entertainment Weekly that fan favorite X-Men character Wolverine will meet his demise.
There will be a storyline titled “3 Months to Die” which leads into the mini series “The Death of Wolverine.” Planned as a four issue series written by Charles Soule and illustrations by Steve McKiven the first issue will be released in September, and will continue as a weekly release until its final fourth issue.
Editor Mike Marts tells EW, “For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor; he almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for hundred years?”
Marts is being extremely open about the passing of such a pivotal character to not only the X-Men, but the Marvel universe as a whole, adding; “You’re gonna be entering into a world without Wolverine. That affects not only his teammates, but also the Marvel Universe at large. We’ve got a lot of things in the works already.”
Writer of the series, Soule explained his hope for fan approval of how it will be handled in the comic saying, “I hope that when people finish it, they’ll feel like he died in a way that was true to him.”
This has to be some devastating news to die-hard Wolverine fans, but knowing how these series works we will be seeing Wolverine somehow in the future, and most likely it will create a center point for another elaborate storyline. What are your thoughts on axing such a major character?
