X-Men: Days of Future Past has not even hit cinemas yet and already we’ve got another X-Men film in the franchise on the way to look forward to.

It was announced today that X-Men: Apocalypse will be released in 2016. Fans suspected something was afoot yesterday (Thursday December 5) when director Bryan Singer posted the following tweet:

Then today Exhibitor Relations confirmed that Apocalypse would be in cinemas May 27, 2016.

Apocalypse claims to be the first mutant and appears to be immortal. He was first known as En Sabah Nur, “The First One”, back in ancient Eygpt. He learnt from a very young age that “the strong will survive,” and it was living by this philosophy that shaped his future actions throughout the future.

Digital Spy recounts how he’s “best known for employing a unit of genetically altered warriors called the Horsemen of Apocalypse, which several X-Men have served on over the years”.

Even though its release isn’t for another two and a half years, it already faces some tough competition when it does eventually open. It is slated to go up against Disney’s Alice in Wonderland 2 and have Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 3 open a fortnight later.

Luckily we don’t have to wait that long for a new X-Men film. X-Men: Days of Future Past opens May 23 next year.
