Starz and its massive American Gods panel did not disappoint fans at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. In addition to making a major casting announcement at the beginning of the panel, they also debuted an incredible teaser, giving fans of the book and newcomers alike something something to be excited for.
The trailer gives viewers a hint of the massive conflict going on between the old gods and the new gods, with the Earth as the battleground. The series has been praised for its near perfect casting, which keeps getting better. As executive producer Bryan Fuller (of Pushing Daisies fame) came out, he announced the latest star to join the cast: Kristin Chenoweth will be playing Easter, one of the old gods.
The trailer itself looks amazing; giving a great introduction to Shadow’s world to new fans and giving enough fun hints at what is to come for those who have read (and reread) the book. It begins when Shadow is released from prison, and follows him as he counters some strange characters along the way. Glimpses are given of a number of the old gods and new gods, but not enough as to give away their stories.
Author Neil Gaiman, who received a standing ovation at the panel, spoke a bit about the show, telling viewers what differences they can expect to see between the book and the series, telling them that, “we get to spend a lot more time with a lot more characters than in the book”. The trailer seemed pretty true to the novel, and it’s exciting to think of what other details they could have added. Hopefully with Gaiman’s involvement, they will be tastefully added.
Gillian Anderson wasn’t present for the panel, but she also gave fans a treat, by tweeting out a picture of her as Media (and Media posing as Marilyn Monroe):
Doesn't mean I don't love you! Here's a little more of this story. @AmericanGodsSTZ @BryanFuller #SDCC #Media pic.twitter.com/fAFpBQjpMu
