Sherlock fans, don’t try to mark the Season 4 premiere date on your calendars just yet. Despite rumors that the popular show might return to TV by 2016, our beloved Benedict Cumberbatch has shared that there’s a chance there might not even be a Season 4.

“I genuinely don’t know,” Cumberbatch says in an interview for Radio Times. “That’s not me trying to be mysterious. None of us know if there will be a fourth, fifth, or sixth series.”

Before you give out a desperate yelp, let me tell you that Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, creators of Sherlock, however, have confirmed, through their interviews, that they have mapped out season 4 and 5.

“Mark and I, for no particular reason, we just got out of the rain and sat at the top of the [Sherlock] production bus … and we just started plotting out what we could do in the future…  We plotted out the whole of series four and five,” said Moffat.

The big deal here are the lead actors’ busy schedules as they are both in-demand right now and have lined up quite a few movies and are also set to appear on London stage.  As appealing as other projects can be, Benedict admits that it’s always lovely to return to the role of Sherlock, especially alongside Martin Freeman as John Watson.

Fingers crossed, in a few years time we might get a Sherlock Season 4.
