The Railway Man is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Eric Lomax. The autobiographical story recounts his time as a prisoner of war in Singapore during World War II. Firth stars as Lomax, a British officer who was captured by the Japanese and forced to work on the Thai-Burma railway.
Like many before and after him, his experiences of war haunt him to the present day. This is compounded when he discovers, at the behest of his wife (Kidman), that his captor is still alive. With his best friend by his side (Stellan Skarsgård), Lomax travels back to the site of his torture in the search of closure.
The Railway Man is in cinemas January 1, 2014.
