“Deep Blue Sea 2” Is Not The Original But It”s Still A Fun Ride

On April 17th, the movie world gave us digital access to Deep Blue Sea 2 which is coming 19 years after the original. This sequel did not and will not go to theaters, for very good reasons, but if it hits Netflix, or another streaming platform, its worth your 93 minutes. Deep Blue Sea 2 takes over where the first film's reserch left off. This movie is silly and follows a very similar formula to the original, but I'll break it down.

We open on a fishing boat with two men catching sharks for their fins, when they get a radio signal that they are in imminent danger. These two don't believe it and continue their work which is when we get the pleasure of watching five bull sharks attack in a 'V' formation. Once the fisherman have become lunch, our lovable shark trainer pulls up in a boat and leads them back to their facility, which is 1000 times smaller and less advance then the previous one. Our shark trainer's name is Trent Slater (Rob Mayes) and he isn't there to think, at least not in the film's opening. Next, we meet Misty as she's teaching a college class about shark conservation and that bull sharks are the only sharks she'd never get in the water with, yes that is important because, of course, this time around we're doing research on bull sharks. Enter Craig Burns (Darron Meyer), legal for billionaire, scientest Carl Durant (The 100s' Michael Beach) to invite Misty to see their facility and share her expertise. She is not feeling this invite until money starts being thrown around and then she decides she can give it a try.

I won't spoil the rest of the movie other then sharing the basic premise that Durant wants to unlock more of the human brain so that robots don't take out the human species and he's testing it on sharks. Some of the attack scenes are epic while others will leave you feeling cheated, along with some strange shark noise sound effects. Overall, the slight change in story allows it to be a fun shark movie of its own, but don't confuse this as endorsement of it as a sequel to Deep Blue Sea, because we'd like to think of it as its own shark movie with a similar story. Takes the pressure off.

Have you seen it? Not everyone jumps on every shark movie that ever comes out like I do, so maybe you wouldn't even give it a second look. But, if you like cheesy shark movies, then this is not one to pass up. Hit us up and tell us what you think, and be sure to check out the trailer below.
