How does one celebrate the 90th birthday of an American icon? Well, if the birthday boy is Dick Van Dyke, you honor him with a Mary Poppins-themed flash mob! The actor put on his happy face and joined his wife Arlene to enjoy choreographed performances of “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Jolly Holiday,” among others, at The Grove outdoor mall in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The perpetually smiling actor, whose actual birthday is December 13, beamed with delight and showed his ardent fans that 90 years is not too young to have fun and join in the festivities. As the jauntily costumed performers danced and sang below his perch on the mall’s upper level, Mr. Van Dyke sang and clapped along — fully engaged by the performance.
Not satisfied to sit idly by, the actor finished the experience by joining the wannabe chimney sweeps for an a capella version of “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” Smiles were plentiful and good cheer was all around. It was a fitting tribute to a living legend and all around great guy!
