From Sherlock to The Hobbit, Benedict Cumberbatch really does seem to be in everything at the moment.
The first still from his next project has just been released, in which he plays the computer scientist Alan Turing.
In the biopic The Imitation Game, Cumberbatch portrays the man credited with cracking the infamous Enigma Code used by the Germans during the Second World War.
Despite being praised for this key role in the war effort, Turing’s post-war life was far from happy. He was convicted of indecency when he was discovered to be a homosexual, and was later chemically castrated. Turing ended his own life in 1954. He was granted a posthumous pardon for his conviction only this week, on December 24th.
This was the result of years of tireless campaigning.
The film, with screenplay by Graham Moore, is directed by Morten Tyldum and based on Andrew Hodge’s book Alan Turing: The Enigma. It is due for release some time in 2014.
Cumberbatch will be joined by Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard.
