The nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced this morning. The big stand out was La La Land, which received 14 nominations, matching the current record set by All About Eve in 1950 and Titanic in 1997. With nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Original Screenplay, La La Land could potentially join a small group of three films that have currently won the big five categories. A sweep for La La Land is far from a lock; just take a look at the nominees for the big awards.

This year, there are several other things of interest to look out for or impress your friends with at your Oscars viewing party. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda is nominated for Best Original Song. His song “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana is up against two La La Land numbers, but a win will complete Miranda’s EGOT. Miranda currently has two Grammys, three Tony Awards, and one Emmy. Having won his first Tony Award in 2008, a win at this year’s Oscars ceremony will make him the fastest person to achieve EGOT status — as well as the youngest.
Everyone remembers the #OscarsSoWhite controversy surrounding last year’s ceremony, but don’t expect more boycotts this year. Seven actors and actresses of color have been nominated: Denzel Washington, Dev Patel, Ruth Negga, Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, and Octavia Spencer. There is also diversity on other nominations in other big categories such as writing and directing.
Manchester by the Sea earned Amazon its first Best Picture nomination, something the other streaming giant Netflix has yet to achieve.
