The Devious Maids are hanging up their uniforms for good. After four seasons, Lifetime has cancelled Devious Maids a few weeks after the season finale. The series followed the lives of four Latina maids and their Beverly Hills employers. In addition to the romantic entanglements of the maids and their wealthy employers, each season revolved around mystery and murder.
Devious Maids was the first all-Latina ensemble cast on English-speaking television and starred Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sánchez and Judy Reyes. Other cast members included Susan Lucci, Grant Show, Rebecca Wisocky and Tom Irwin.
The fourth season of Devious Maids contained 10 episodes, down from its usual 13. This was likely due to the ratings dropping each season. The ratings for Season 4 were relatively steady at 0.30 in the 18-49 demographic, but dropped from 0.46 in the same demographic during Season 3.
Devious Maids was the perfect summer guilty pleasure. Perfectly soapy, a little predictable, sometimes ridiculous, but always entertaining. With the backdrop of Rosie trying to exonerate Spence for murdering his ex, Season 4 experimented with new character pairings. Marisol tolerated Evelyn as a house guest and a somewhat reluctant employee. Evelyn’s estranged husband, Adrian, unsuccessfully tried to court Zoila. Genevieve found herself out of a maid and best friend after choosing to save Zoila instead of her unborn child. The arrival of Carmen’s long-lost daughter, Daniela, uprooted her life. Learning the truth about her mother, set Danni out for revenge and in search of her father.
Like the three earlier seasons, Season 4 ended on a cliffhanger. After a one year time jump, Marisol left her groom at the altar. When her friends went to investigate, they found a handwritten “I’m sorry” note and a broken window with blood on the glass but no bride. Had there been a Season 5, Marisol’s disappearance would’ve been front and center. Will Carmen discover that Danni lied about her father being dead? How will Genevieve’s love life fare now that she’s dating women? Will Spence discover Tucker is not his biological son? Viewers will never know, but Ana Ortiz made sure to assure fans that Marisol would be okay, despite being kidnapped.
