Fifth Harmony, Charli XCX, Jon Bellion, Jack U, and so many other artists shine on this week’s danceable #MusicMonday collection!
Happy Leap Year PopStars! Today we’re celebrating an extra #MusicMonday in February with some hugely danceable releases from big name and rising talents! Get ready for some seduction on the dance floor, some carefree dancing, and some darker (but still very
danceable) treasures…
“Work From Home” – Fifth Harmony
Fifth Harmony are kicking off our Leap Year approved #MusicMonday collection and an album campaign with the release of their new single “Work From Home.” The track is the second high profile “work” song in 2016 (the first being Rihanna’s), and we believe that the ladies of 5H are taking the trophy this time around. There’s a true pop appeal to the track’s pristine production, playful lyrics, and powerful vocal performances. We’re admittedly a little less enthused by a second (and unnecessary) Ty Dolla $ign collab, simply because it feels like they are trying to recreate the formula that was so successful on “Worth It;” however, this truly has potential to become one of the group’s most successful releases to date. Welcome back to the game ladies!
“See You Bleed” – Ramsey
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/246614805″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]
Dark and mysterious, rising Los Angeles based songstress Ramsey entrances listeners on her latest release “See You Bleed.” The experimental talent has developed an ever-growing following on SoundCloud, where she treats fans to releases with increasing regularity. “See You Bleed” is one of her most recent projects, and Ramsey’s distinctive voice makes for a compelling listen over a dangerously thorny production. Like a lush garden rose, Ramsey is both enticing and prickly on the track; her voice cracks like a whip across the trap-infused chorus, before seducing a lover a little closer. Ramsey’s music is experimental and dark, but it carries an irresistible sense of power.
“Secret (Shh)” – Charli XCX
2016 is shaping up to be a big year for Charli XCX. The UK siren recently announced the creation of her Vroom Vroom record label, released an EP with the same title, and is promising her most pop-leaning release yet with her upcoming album. For this week’s #MusicMonday our interest is directed towards the EP, as we hone in on standout track “Secret (Shh).” It’s a legitimate banger. Growling bass and electronic synth set a stuttering soundscape, over which Charli XCX’s vocals have never sounded more confident. “Good girls shouldn’t party” she seductively coos over the track before razing her “good girl” facade in the coals of her sexiest production to date. The SUCKER songstress is renowned for her forward thinking productions, and “Secret (Shh)” is one of her most innovative releases to date. Don’t worry Charli, we won’t tell your secret!
“I Got You” EK
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/244976197″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]
Hailing from Boston, hip hop maven EK has been destined for big things since earning the DJBooth “This Is My Year” award in 2013. Since then the “Mean Ol Town” rapper has made the move to Los Angeles, where he’s continued honing his craft. His most recent release “I Got You” displays his varied tastes and innovative story telling, as EK raps about his seductive yet deceitful lover over a darkly pulsing production. “She’s Cleopatra / she cut like a dagger / oh it doesn’t matter” he pronounces before submitting to her double-crossing ways. EK is clearly entranced by his dangerous lover, and nothing can convince him to let go. It may be the death of him, but he’ll be dancing till noon with her regardless. His slick flow and equally powerful vocals make for an intriguing listen, so at least his fall will be beautifully captured in the music…
“Set On Fire: PrototypeRaptor Remix” – Magic Giant
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/247186077″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]
LA-based folk revival band Magic Giant recruited PrototypeRaptor for a remix of their indie anthem “Set On Fire.” PrototypeRaptor’s electro-tinged remix of the track injects the track with new life and transforms it into a certifiable pop masterpiece. In his hand’s the track’s already impressive production marches forward and adds even more warmth to the fiery track. Some tropical house influences and echoing synths make the release all the more epic, and it’s undeniable that this is a must listen during your #MusicMonday prowling!
“Pray For Rain” – Jessica Rotter
[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/248464929″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]
After lighting things on fire with Magic Giant, the prolific Jessica Rotter is praying for a deluge on her most recent release. Renowned for her expressive yet versatile musicality, Rotter’s latest release is a soulful serving of indie-pop. A live instrumentation sets the scene, as Jessica Rotter sings about fighting off the allure of love at the most challenging of times. “Where do we go from here” the songstress inquires on the track, before moving into the chorus and begging for a sweet storm to sweep her into a lover’s embrace. The track is a single off her upcoming Plains LP, and it serves as an excellent introduction to Rotter’s musical storytelling capabilities.
“Love Me Like That” – The Knocks feat. Carly Rae Jepsen
Carly Rae Jepsen is traveling straight to the dance floor on her collaboration with production duo The Knocks. The 80’s tinged effort is as compelling as Jepsen’s massively underrated 2015 efforts on Emotion, and the “I Really Like You” siren is completely at home over the bubbling synths. The track serves as The Knocks’ lead single off their upcoming 55, and on it Jepsen is stunned to realize that her romantic interest doesn’t share the same earth-shaking feelings she herself is experiencing in their relationship. There’s a sense of longing in her revelation; however, it is unclear how the songstress will deal with the reality. If nothing else, she’ll be able to repair her broken heart on the dance floor with the striding synths and ecstasy-inducing tinkling keys. Gorgeous lyricism, an incredible production, and Jepsen’s sweet vocals make the track a #MusicMonday standout.
“All Time Low: Acoustic” – Jon Bellion
Rising talent and superstar producer (responsible for the likes of Eminem’s “Monster” and Jason Derulo’s “Trumpets”) Jon Bellion is baring his broken heart on the acoustic retelling of his most recent “All Time Low.” Stripped of the additional productions, Bellion’s crystalline vocals and lyrical intent are front and center over sparse strings and a cappella backing. The crooner unflinchingly admits to a former flame that his love life has taken a nose dive since she moved on, leaving him trying to pick himself up out of the ashes. Although stripped back and simplistic, the track has all the great elements of a true Jon Bellion production (right down to the beatboxing and vocables that make “Trumpets” such a gem). “All Time Low” is a promise of things to come and even more proof that Bellion is truly one of the most talented up and comers in the industry.
“Candyman” – Zedd feat. Aloe Blacc
After offering his soulful vocals to Avici’s 2013 chart topper “Wake Me Up,” soulful crooner Aloe Blacc has teamed up with Zedd for his return to pop on “Candyman.” Their collaboration has resulted in a joyful ode to the power of love, set to a production custom tailored to dancing. The track’s production builds before coming to a head on the chorus, lush with triumphant synths and racing electronic beats. “And it feels so good” Blacc’s voice proudly proclaims over the production, before a soft whisper and some atmospheric tones bring things back down for another verse. One thing is clear, and it’s that it feels so damn good to have Aloe Blacc back for a #MusicMonday contribution.
“Mind” – Jack U feat. Kai
Diplo and Skrillex are at their most compelling on their latest Jack U release “Mind.” The track has Skrillex sharing vocal responsibilities with Canadian singer songwriter Kai over a more stripped back production, and the twosome find themselves embroiled in an addictive romance. “You love when you push me to the point of crazy / and I love when you’re on your knees and begging for me” Kai sings in the first lines, introducing listeners to there twisted love. Kai’s sweetly seductive tones perfectly compliment Skrillex’s more direct delivery, and it’s easy to imagine their relationship descending into what it has become as we listen to them lyrically dance around one another. A distorted dance break gives the superstar producers a chance to showcase their bottomless skills.
Bonus Track: “Rock Bottom” – Hailee Steinfeld feat. DNCE
As a bonus to close out this week’s #MusicMonday we’re revisiting Hailee Steinfeld‘s HAIZ EP to listen to a recently remixed rendition of “Rock Bottom.” This time around Steinfeld recruited Joe Jonas and his DNCE bandmates to add a little additional depth to the track. Steinfeld and Jonas share the main vocal responsibilities on the track, and the twosome create some lush harmonies on the track’s anthemic chorus. The remixed version of the track is all the more anthemic. Hitting rock bottom has never sounded so enjoyable!
