Surgeons Turn ‘Two Against One’ On Grey’s Anatomy This Week

It feels as though everyone lost the plot Thursday night (including the writers). Though there was plenty of character development and intrigue, much of it felt so out of the blue that it was a difficult episode to enjoy. Apologies, but honesty’s my policy!

Bailey and Ben…

So Bailey has OCD all of a sudden? I mean, seriously? I don’t understand this move at all… maybe if we’d had an inkling at any point during the last ten years that Bailey had a thing about germs, or order, or control this would have been more believable. I know her nickname used to be Nazi but she has never had any of these symptoms before. So clearly we are supposed to believe that her OCD is stress induced, or brought on by all the trauma she’s suffered – but this doesn’t really make sense either as wouldn’t she have been letting little symptom specs fly every now and again over the last few years? I mean hospital shooting, anybody? Array of interns collapsing/dying on her watch, anybody? Divorce, anybody? Her son nearly dying, anybody? Yes I now seem to be ranting, further apologies.

In terms of the actual program, we saw Bailey scour her son’s room in search of a smell nobody could sense but her. She also made Wilson give their patient multiple enemas to make sure he had a “squeaky clean colon” for surgery. She compulsively pulls at her fingertips and doesn’t seem happy about Ben taking up his old job at the hospital. Good old Ben notices she’s acting a lil weird and twitchy so eventually calls her up on it, after watching her put the patient through more unnecessary procedures. Bailey denies there’s anything wrong with her and reveals she found the bad-smelling source in little Tuck’s bedroom. “Everything’s fine,” she insists. Except it’s totally not as we leave her compulsively pulling at her fingertips.

Meredith and Christina…

The end of the twisted-sister era continues this week when Meredith refuses to let Christina save a baby’s life as it would mean sharing the new 3D printer with her. Jeez, Mer when did you get so petty and spiteful? Team Christina all the way.

At the beginning, Meredith enlists Steph to wake her up when the printer has finished printing it’s first 3D thing. They’re uber excited because it’s the first step on Meredith’s new research project ladder; it’s the future of medicine, yadda yadda yadda. Turns out it’s also a fork, so not everybody else is as excited.

Meanwhile, Christina and Sharky are getting along really well! Christina even brings him coffee for watching her patients all night. It’s like she’s turned into Burke a la season one. What a difference ten years make.

Things are clearly awkward between Meredith and Christina, which is something Alex picks up on but he’s told to “stay out of it” by Meredith. Don’t start on Karev now girl, or the only friend you’ll have is that dope you call McDreamy.

Christina and Sharky are having trouble with their infant patient, who’s rejecting the synthetic transplant and keeps needing to have it replaced. Sharky comes up with a grand plan to save the baby – a risky, never-been-done-before-except-in-Japan procedure – that involves the use of Meredith’s fancy 3D printer. Christina is hesitant as she knows it’ll piss off Mer, but Sharky reminds her that the printer belongs to the hospital and their need is greater than Mer’s today. Dying baby trumps plastic liver model.

Meredith is currently helping Alex on a peds general surgery case; a fifteen year old boy needs a lot of cancerous tumors removed from his liver. Alex gets concerned when he believes Meredith is being too aggressive in her approach and demands that she stop the surgery before she kills the patient. Mer is adamant she can remove all the tumors and only agrees to stop when Steph steps forward and sides with Karev. (Apparently there’s a two-against-one rule amongst surgeons that we never knew about before.)

Christina eventually asks Meredith if she and Sharky can borrow the printer to save their patient’s life and Meredith flatly refuses because it’ll disrupt her research. Oh nos. Karev watches this go down, and as Christina calmly (though frustratedly) walks away he informs Meredith that Christina’s right.

Alex to Mer: “If you need to be told you’re good, fine Mer you’re good. But Yang’s right, you’re a lousy doctor today.” In other words…

Later she gets some moral support from McDreamy as he tells her “the fork is the future” and to go check on her liver model. She smilingly obliges and that’s when she catches Yang and Sharky red handed; commandeering the 3D printer for their own use, having tossed Mer’s half-completed liver model aside.

April and Matthew

These two revisit their Godly dilemma as Matthew reveals he’d like to lose his virginity before they get hitched. Not a total shock… Nor was April’s indecisive reply. After chatting to Arizona she decides to sleep with him, but then backs out at the last minute. She doesn’t want Matthew to break his promise to God the way that she did last year. I don’t like this storyline, it reminds me of the whole ‘you’re either a virgin or a whore’ thing that I’d like to think no longer exists on our screens (though clearly does).

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how this relationship ends. (I have no doubt it will end at some point… In a world where Calzona split up, what hope have these drips got?) Interestingly, April and Matthew test as a perfectly compatible couple in the beginning of the episode so we’ll probably see that opposites actually attract when Jackson eventually comes back into the picture.

Everybody Else…

Callie spends a considerably long time interviewing Owen’s new girlfriend for a position at the hospital. Callie thinks she’s perfect for Owen and offers her a job, but she rejects – telling Owen that she’d never want to work in the same place as him because if they ever broke up everybody would side with him. True.

Arizona is still sleeping with Murphy and seems quite happy about it although she looked rather guilty when taking off her wedding ring at the end of the episode to get into the shower with her. She also seems surprised when Owen’s girlfriend assumes she and Callie are divorced. Next week is the episode Shonda hyped up on Twitter as Calzona week, so I guess we’ll get some serious developments (or maybe even… answers?!) then.

Derek reminds Jackson that he has to teach the interns by letting them do procedures (he mentioned Mark, it was a knife to the chest).

Richard seems to be reliving his youth, in other news, which was kind of weird as he turned into that old guy who insists on telling you stories about his youth to ‘teach you a lesson’. Not sure where the show is going with Richard.

Overall…

No where near as good as last week, I felt like tonight’s episode was a rather hefty let down. There weren’t any stand out moments and the whole OCD thing with Bailey is just confusing. It reminds me of when Izzy started seeing Denny and we were all just willing the writers to get to the point, fast. Also, we need more kick-ass Christina scenes! She’s too sad…

Don’t forget to check out the promo for next week, it looks very Callie centric:
