Venom To Kick Off R-Rated Movie Franchise

In spite of Spider-Man’s move to the MCU, it looks like Sony is going ahead with an R-rated comic book movie franchise, starting with a Venom film.

Rumors of a Venom movie have been swirling around the internet for years now, but it finally looks like things are coming together for everyone’s favorite symbiote. The Spider-Man villain may be getting an R-rated film of his own, following on the heels of popular R-rated comic book movies, Deadpool and Logan. Venom has been listed under the categories of action, horror, and sci-fi.

But that’s not all. Venom is going to act as a jumping-off point as a way to establish their own universe, similar to what Marvel has going with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unlike the current incarnation of Spider-Man, Venom will not be considered part of the MCU, nor will it be related to any of Sony’s earlier work in the Spider-Man universe. Along with Venom, it was recently revealed that Sony is going ahead with a Black Cat and Silver Sable movie—which would be a natural second step for Sony in the attempt to build a cinematic universe of their very own.

So what does that mean for our dear web slinger? Producer of Spider-Man: Homecoming Amy Pascal seems to think that Spidey’s time in the MCU could come to an end after Homecoming 2.

While there’s no official word yet that this is happening, it would certainly be a confusing move after the excitement of the MCU getting Spider-Man in the first place. Would Spider-Man be recast (again?). Would we have to see his origin (again?). Time will tell on that front, but in the meantime, a Venom movie is scheduled for October 5, 2018. The script will be written by Dante Harper.
