The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced on July 14th by the Television Academy CEO, Hayma Washington, Veep‘s Anna Chlumsky and Criminal Minds’ Shemar Moore. Read ahead for the list of nominees and some interesting fun facts about this year’s nominations.
2017 Emmy Nominations Fun Facts:
HBO continues to dominate, getting a whopping 110 Emmy nominations this year (up from last year’s 94) aided by multi-nominated shows Westworld, Veep, Big Little Lies and The Night Of. Streaming giant Netflix is right behind HBO, grabbing an impressive 91 nominations (up from 2016’s 54 nods). Netflix owes its good fortune to Stranger Things, The Crown and Master of None.
Among broadcast networks, NBC got a huge boost on its Emmy nominations, ending up on third place behind HBO and Netflix. Thanks to the Donald Trump-fueled resurgence of Saturday Night Live, freshman hit show This Is Us and The Voice, the “Must See TV” network pocketed 60 nominations, up from last year’s 41.
Saturday Night Live and Westworld lead the pack of most nominated shows with 22 Emmy nods each. FX’s anthology series Feud: Bette and Joan ties for second place with Stranger Things, at 18 nominations each. Veep, Big Little Lies and Fargo follow.
Saturday Night Live also gets the honor of being the show with most acting nominations, with 9 nods. 7 actors from NBC’s This Is Us, including leads Milo Ventimiglia and Sterling K. Brown, were recognized with acting nominations. Feud: Bette and Joan and Big Little Lies follow with 6 and 5 acting nominations respectively.
Riz Ahmed, Alec Baldwin, Matthew Rhys, Ann Dowd and Ty Burrell received more than one acting Emmy nomination for their work on different projects. On the other hand, nominated actors Aziz Ansari and Ewan McGregor got another nomination for writing and narrating, respectively. Donald Glover and Liev Schreiber obtained three nominations each; Glover was recognized for directing, writing, and acting on his hit show Atlanta, while Schreiber got two nods for narration added to his Lead Actor nomination for Ray Donovan.
The nominations, as per usual, brought some surprises (Stranger Thing‘s Barb, actress Shannon Purser, unexpected Guest Star nomination; Modern Family grabbing a Best Comedy nod yet again; Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg co-nominated for Best Reality Show Hosts) and more than a few snubs (Freddie Highmore, Oprah Winfrey, The Leftovers, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, among many others).
