He first went where no man has gone before in directing the Star Trek reboot and this summer’s Star Trek Into Darkness, now TheWrap is reporting that J.J. Abrams is close to signing a deal to go to a galaxy far far away.

Once the deal is closed, Abrams will be at the helm for Star Wars Episode VII. The latest film in the Star Wars saga was announced last fall after Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion.

This piece of news only adds to JJ Abrams geek cred as the man behind not only Star Trek and now Star Wars but also TV cult-faves AliasFringe, Lost, FlashForward and Revolution. Abrams also directed Mission: Impossible III

Abrams announcement comes after a slew of directors were rumored or that fans wished would direct from the likes of Joss Whedon to Guillermo Del Toro.

Set to be released in 2015, the screenplay will be written by Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt.
