On Friday, February 1st, “Five Dances” made its world premiere as the opening film for Lincoln Center Film Society’s “Dance on Camera” film festival. Alan Brown (Private Romeo, Superheroes), directs the film which chronicles the rehearsal period for a series of 5 dances, telling the stories of the four dancers and choreographer both inside and outside of the studio.
Although all have been professional dancers for many years, this is the first on-screen appearance for the entire cast. Ryan Steele, who plays “Chip” in the film, just recently concluded his run as “Specs” in Disney’s Newsies and is now preparing for an ensemble role in the Broadway adaptation of Roald Dahl’s “Matilda.”
Reed LuPlau, who portrays “Theo”, described the process of being cast in the film as being similar to other auditions and castings. He said that he has been dancing since he learned to walk, and that when his agent told him of the opportunity, he welcomed the chance to perform.
Unlike other dance movies where dance simply moves the plot along, the focus of the film is primarily dance, and the storylines flow directly out of the interaction. A romantic relationships begins from a particularly steamy dance combination and old flames are rekindled as a result of a misstep. The movie leads you on a journey alongside the dancers as if you were a casual observer in the rehearsal space.
There is an addition screening as a part of the film festival on February 2nd, and will be distributed in both the U.S. and Europe in the spring. More information on the film can be found at fivedancesthemovie.com
