Get excited everyone because we may be getting to see Jonathan Groff on T.V. screens on the regular again soon. J. Groff, veteran stage actor and bestie to Ms. Lea Michele, has signed on to star in an upcoming HBO comedy pilot centered on gay life in San Francisco.

Created by Sarah Condon and David Marshall Grant, the untitled project will explore the “options in contemporary life and the complexities of the modern gay experience.” Groff will play Patrick, a man whose professional life as a video game developer is flying high while his personal life is suffering. Also cast is the role of Augustin, Patrick’s best friend, who will be played by Frankie Alvarez.

The pilot script will be penned by Michael Lannan, based on his script Lorimer, and will be directed by Andrew Haigh.

With some big talented attached to the project, but on-screen and behind the scenes, the show as the potential not only to be extremely well written and hilarious but very successful. The premise will recall the excitement of Queer As Folk (which came to mind immediately when I read the show synopsis) but also be unique simultaneously. There really hasn’t been a show about gay culture based, in one of the most accepting cities in America.  Plus, we’ll get to see Johnathan Groff in a comedy role, which will be quite a switch from his last drama packed role in Boss. This project should be a major win for HBO who seems to continuously wrack them up, Girls being the latest addition to that column.
