This is the kind of story that we never want to report. A life that started with such much promise has ended in heartbreaking tragedy. Reports have been coming in from all over that Country singer Mindy McCready has taken her own life by way of self-inflicted gun shots. People and Entertainment Weekly, among others, are citing multiple sources that confirm the singer’s death. According to People, Stacy McCloud, a reporter at Fox17 in Nashville, tweeted the news on Sunday night and clarified her tweets an hour later:
This tragic news comes soon after in January, McCready’s life partner and the father of one of her sons, Zayne, singer-songwriter David Wilson, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Three weeks after his death, a judge ordered Mindy to be committed to a treatment facility to deal with her issues of mental and alcohol. After this order was issue, Mindy’s sons were taken from her and placed into foster care.
Mindy McCready was professionally best known for her multi-platinum debut album Ten Thousand Angels, which was released in 1996. That album spawned four chart singles, including the No. 1 hit, “Guys Do It All the Time” the title track, “Maybe He’ll Notice Her Now” (her duet with Ritchie McDonald from Lonestar) and “A Girl’s Gotta Do (What a Girl’s Gotta Do).
Her next album If I Don’t Stay the Night had three chart hits: “What If I Do”, “The Other Side of this Kiss” and “You’ll Never Know”. In 1999, McCready released her third album, which was a commercial flop and led to her being dropped from her record label. McCready was resigned by Capitol but the album released by them also was a failure and they too dropped her.
McCready released a new song in 2008 “I’m Still Here” via her official website and then released her critically acclaimed fifth album I’m Still Here two years later in March 2010.
McCready, in recent years, made the news more for her personal life than her singing career. In 2005, McCready attempted suicide twice by overdosing on alcohol and antidepressants while she was pregnant with her first son, Zander. In 2008, McCready was taken to the hospital after paramedics were called to her home after an apparent suicide attempt where they found wounds on her wrists. Also that year, she made the news for her affair as a teenage with baseball star Roger Clemens while he was still married to his wife.
Along with these attempts of suicide, McCready also had several run ins with the law. McCready had been arrested and put on probation several times for DUIs, assault and battery, drug possessions and probation violations among other legal issues.
In 2010, Mindy was hospitalized for a possible drug overdose due to a reaction from a medication given to her by her mother. In 2012, Mindy gave birth to her second son, Zayne, whose father would end up taking his own life earlier this year in January.
Mindy is survived by her son Zander 6, with her ex Billy Knight, and Zayne, 10 months. Our thoughts here at PopWrapped are with her family and friends as they deal with this tragedy.
