3rd Annual Streamy Awards Winners Announced!

Staff Writer

The third annual Streamy Awards was held on February 17th at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California to celebrate the best in original online programming. The event was hosted by Chris Hardwick of “Nerdist” and honored the best in web series. Notable musical performances peppered the awards show, including songs from Soulja Boy, Boyce Avenue, and Shontelle. Vanilla Ice closed out the show with a few of his hits (including, of course, “Ice Ice Baby”), inciting lots of singing and dancing from the actors, writers, and producers in the crowd.

When Hardwick opened the show, he discussed the importance of web video and how it has evolved throughout the years. He noted how integral every person’s work was on whatever series they happened to be a part of. “Web video, when you boil it down,” Hardwick explained, “is all about passion.” And truly, those who work on the nominated series have a passion for what they do. There is also a distinct difference, the host explained, between television and web series. “Television just has to be watchable,” Hardwick noted. “Web video has to be SHARABLE.” Videos, after all, go viral because they demand to be shared and passed along from person to person.

And truly, the nominees in all categories share one thing in common: their passion for their unique medium of storytelling is palpable. These are series that exist on YouTube, primarily – a medium of storytelling that is tricky at best, and amazing if executed properly. The nominees and categories ranged from comedies to dramas, children’s series to talk shows. Those particular artists, actors, and shows have risen above the rest.
