Have you ever wondered how those huge salaries of those actors in films could be funded so easily? Well, here’s your answer: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has just passed the 1 billion dollar mark (equal to about 770 million euro and 670 million pounds), which places it in the top fifteen most successful films to date. These rankings don’t take into account the fact that both inflation and the option to watch the film in IMAX are quite an advantage for The Hobbit, but it is definitely not bad for a first part of a trilogy.
By reaching a billion dollars, the first part of The Hobbit now surpasses the grossing of Peter Jackson’s first two adaptations of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, but it doesn’t even come close to the success of the third part, The Return of the King. It’s a success nonetheless, as Warners president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg pointed out: “From Berlin to Beijing, it is so gratifying how the release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been such an event with audiences around the world. We know that moviegoers everywhere are already excited about the next film, as are we.”
The next part in the trilogy, titled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is scheduled to release in December of this year.
