It looks like everyone is going green…even Gucci! It was announced yesterday that the high-end designer brand would be releasing a line of sustainable luxury leather bags. A sneak peek of the line was given yesterday during Paris Fashion Week. As for the bags themselves, they’re certainly the signature Gucci style, but all are a rich shade of red with unique woven designs.
Gucci has joined forces with Rainforest Alliance to source leather for the line from certified ranches in the Brazilian Amazon region. These four ranches have received high marks for their conscientious efforts to protect their surrounding wildlife habitats, promote the rights and welfare of their workers, and provide ethical treatment to their livestock.
Rossella Ravagli, head of CSR and sustainability for Gucci, said in a release that ”this launch proves that the fashion industry can be a force for good through directly addressing a fundamental environmental issue.” Gucci is also making a donation of €50,000 (about $65,000) to the National Wildlife Federation.
The Gucci for Green Carpet Challenge handbag line will be offered in a selection of flagship stores worldwide, as well as online in the U.S. and Europe.
So, what do you think? Should more high-end designers be following in Gucci’s footsteps, offering environmentally sustainable options for shoppers?
