Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar winning Django Unchained will provide another feather in his cap – it is the first of his films to receive a Chinese theatrical release.
Sony Pictures announced earlier this week that Django will premiere in the People’s Republic of China on April 11. Due to Chinese strict censorship, only 34 foreign films are screened every year in the country, though this has increased since 2009 following the ruling by the World Trade Organization that their policy at the time of only allowing 20 foreign films a year to be shown there violated international trade rules. With no film classification system, all films screened are ‘suitable for all ages’, Chinese censors screen potential films for violence, sex and sensitive political content. AceShowbiz.com cites a source with knowledge of the Chinese situation as saying that it was ‘likely that a little over one minute of the film would be censored, probably for its bloody violence, nudity, and bad language’. The film received an R rating in the US.
The film, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson, focuses on a former slave’s quest to free his wife from a cruel plantation owner. It has grossed $402 million worldwide. In addition to Tarantino’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, Christoph Waltz also picked up the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Dr King Schultz at last month’s Academy Awards.
