Chord Overstreet has been photographed smoking a cigar and some people are now claiming that he’s a bad influence.
Here’s the thing: how can you judge him, an adult, for smoking a cigar when most teenagers today are doing things much worse?
Chord is in his twenties who works a very demanding job and is looked at as an idol. So when he’s seen smoking a cigar, everybody flips shit and starts degrading him. Yet we don’t degrade the single father working two jobs to support his children who comes home and has a shot of brandy. I don’t see a difference, do you?
But this isn’t the first time something like this has happened. Two months ago, we had the entire ‘Bieber Smokes Pot” fiasco. While that still isn’t completely clear to me, it was put to rest.
Here’s my theory on why everybody makes these things such a big deal: popularity. We are so quick to judge, and criticize and tear celebrities apart without first looking at ourselves. Teens all over the country are addicted to marijuana, meth, crack, alcohol and smoking. People tell them it’s wrong and try to break the habits but after a while they give up.
When we see celebrities doing the same exact behaviors we immediately attack them, degrading their behaviors and de-idolizing them. Personally, I think it’s ok that he smokes cigars. He is an adult, he is capable of making his own decisions.
If he was a teenager, I’d be against it all the way. But he isn’t a teenager, he’s a capable adult.
Smoking does not make someone a bad role model. My biggest role model is my aunt and she smokes, but I don’t see her any different. Chord’s smoking does not directly affect you. If you have such an aversion to it, use this as an opportunity to teach your children that smoking is bad and that they shouldn’t imitate everything they see in the media.
Try being the bigger person here and let him live his life. He has his habits, you have yours. In the words of the Beatles: Let it be.
