It’s hard to believe that between writing the “three thousand” or so more pages required to finish his “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series and consulting on the TV show “Game of Thrones” George R. R. Martin has time to take on anything else. But it seems like he’s managed to find the time! It was announced last month that the fantasy author has signed a two-year development deal with HBO, but what could he possibly do with it?

One possibility would be a series that would act as a prequel to “Game of Thrones”. That option would require significantly less planning, as Martin has already written three novellas about his fictional land of Westeros, and he has said the he is considering writing up to ten more. In an interview with IGN he went on to explain that he has considered the possibility of combining them into a prequel book series set about a century before the events of his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.

Luckily for those of us who are all too familiar with the writer’s tendency to off our favorite characters, he has said that these books would be “lighter in tone and more adventurous”. We’ve got to say, whether or not those theoretical books are turned into a TV show, this option sounds really exciting!

Of course, there are a couple of other options being kicked around by George R. R. Martin and HBO. There has been inside talk of a science fiction series, or even some historical dramas, but nothing too serious. It seems that Martin has decided that unless he can find another pair of show runners like David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the ones hired for “Game of Thrones”, he would not commit to making anything happen.

Personally, we think option one is the way to go! The complex world George R. R. Martin created could certainly stand to be expanded upon, wouldn’t you say? Plus, there’s the added bonus that it would free up significantly more time for him to finish writing his “A Song of Ice and Fire” series!
