Jane Henson, who with husband Jim Henson created The Muppets, died Tuesday at her home in Greenwich, Conn after a battle with cancer. She was 78.
Jane met Jim in a puppetry class at college in D.C. When Jim was offered a job at a local NBC affiliate. He asked Jane to come on as his co-puppeteer and co-creator.
The show Sam and Friends, a series of five-minute shorts, that aired before the news and again before a late night talk show was the forefathers of The Muppets. It even included a prototype of Kermit the Frog.
Jane and Jim Henson married in 1959 and were legally separated in 1986. Jim Henson died in 1990. Two years later, Jane Henson helped found the Jim Henson Legacy, which was dedicated to the preservation of the creations of her late husband. She also found the Jane Henson Foundation for her own philanthropic work.
She is survived by three daughters: Cheryl, Lisa and Heather and two sons: Brian and John. A memorial mass is planned for next week.
